NOTES -
This must have been recorded shortly after I got the Dokorder 7140 4
track in the summer of 1975 when I was 17 years old and had just gotten out of
high school. Two rock guitars trading leads, acoustic guitar for bass, and
a cardboard box and a glass quart jar for the drums. I set up in the
living room at the family homestead and started fooling around with the
multi-tracking.
My sister Barb had just gotten married and things were shaping up as far as I was concerned although my brother and I DID FORGET the words to "The Wedding Song" at her wedding. I'm still sorry Barb!
Other than that, it was a magical summer in 1975; working for National Fruit Canning Co. out at their irrigation site by myself where I was able to play guitar for about 6 hours a day while watching the sprinkler heads go round & round.
I used to go down to the Burlington
Roller Frolic which had dances that summer with live bands most weekends - I
remember seeing Heart and the Wilson sisters there - this would have been just
before their first album came out. All I remember is they did a pretty
good job on "Roundabout" and had nice PA gear. I would stand
around with my musician buddies and check out the visiting band's gear.
Let's see, Heart, Smokey Road, Blue Mountain Eagle and a bunch of others - it's
pretty astounding I remember those band names but I do. It was
usually so loud you couldn't really hear what the band was doing, but we would
all nod our heads in agreement when we saw nice gear.
This picture must have been taken about the time I recorded Blue Jam in July of 1975.
It was a busy summer with the 7 days a week at the cannery and playing guitar constantly. I saw Terry Kath with Chicago in Seattle - he was definitely one of my top guitar heros at the time. Worked, played, drank a lot of beer. It was good summer.
In retrospect, it shouldn't have ended so soon. I packed up my 4-track and guitars and went away to Washington State University in Pullman in September of 1975. Don't tell my kids this, but I should have stayed OUT of school, moved to Seattle and started playing music live full time. Pullman's OK as long as you have some kind of educational goal and a really good windbreaker. A short 31 years ago!!
